Weaving a magic carpet of Wild Garlic at Easterknowe.

Clearing a small space for our treasured Garlic

For the last three years, we’ve been trying to clear a small plantation by the cutting garden and grow wild garlic.  The dream is to cover the floor of the little wood with wild garlic and blue bells.

That’s the plan.

But, things never do go to plan really do they?  The badgers dug up the first planting, perhaps they objected to the smell which is a tad on the hypocritical side as they absolutely honk and the rabbits ate most of the next attempt.  This year though we just may have a crop. Small it may be but it’s a start.  One day, perhaps, badger’s and rabbits permitting, we may be producing Easter Knowe wild garlic pesto to add to our ‘food to go’.  How have the blue bells faired?  You may well ask.  None have been seen since planting!

Just in case you like facts… Wild garlic has a few names: Ramsons, buckram, broad-leaved garlic, wood garlic, bear leek, bear’s garlic. Bear’s?  The Latin name is Allium ursinum and ursinum means bear!
